Bismillah 

ALLAH says in His Qur^an which means"Ask those who recall if you know not"(Surah an-Nahl ayah 43).The scholars all agree that this verse makes it imperative for the one who does not know the legal rulings to(laymen) follow someone who does particularly the mujtahid imam.

Simarily the prophet sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam made it clear in a hadith which means"ALLAH has protected my nation from having a agreement on a misguidance"meaning the scholars agreement on issues of the ummah.

This was the practice of the sahabah and ahlus-sunnah wal jama^ah that followed the salaf up to nowadays. 

The majority of the muslims all over the world don't follow one of the newly innovated groups of today that all claim to be the saved sect but the majority of the muslims follow 1 of the 4 madhdhahib(Schools of fiqh) ie. Pakistan,India,Afghanistan mainly hanafi.Indonesia,Yemen,Syria,Jordan mainly Shafi^i.Morroco,Senegal,Muaritania mainly Maliki.Parts of Eygpt and other Middle Eastern Countries mainly Hanbali.

Are you following ALLAH's command?

Are you following a scholar who's teachings go back to our nabiyy(sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam)?

Are you following the crowd that's not really following Muhammad(sallallahu ^alayhi wa sallam)?
