Assalam alaikum sis. Jazak Allahu khair for your message. There are two views on niqab (the face covering), one says it is compulsory (wajib) and we have to wear it. They are in the minority. Others say it is recommended (mustahabb) and you do it to get extra favor with Allah, who is pleased with your decision.
If it is wajib, then there is no choice. If youare to obey Him, you wear it all the time, anywhere (the lawsof Allah apply everywhere).
If it is recommended (as I believe), then I think if one makes the move to please Allah one would try to please Him everywhere and all the time. But if it is too hard, then one can remove it under some circumstances.
I actually find niqab hard. Although here in Yemen, it's easier as most girls wear it.
As for purdah, it implies more than just the face veil. It is also living according a strict interpretation of what Quran and Sunnah said about the best place for women and the level of interaction she should have with the outside world.
