The Muslim Ummah of South Dakota, including the masjids in Sioux Falls & Brookings, as well as the Muslims scattered across this state in small towns & on military bases.

Languages: English

About Me:

Salaam alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatu

We are an ethnically mixed community of Believers, who share in common the Belief in the Oneness of Allah & the message of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

This profile is our online presence providing interested Muslims with news & information regarding the Ummah of South Dakota.

Sioux Falls, which is a small city in the southeast corner of the state is the community with the largest concentration of Muslims & home to two masjids.

We work, insha Allah, to serve the diverse Muslim community in the region, and also provide dawaah services to the many Americans around us who know little about the teachings of Islam.

The larger Muslim community of Sioux Falls has been growing steadily these last few years, & this includes more & more Muslims.

Many refugees are brought to Sioux Falls by the Lutheran Social Services agency based in Sioux Falls, many of which are Muslims.

In addition Muslim American families migrate to the region for jobs & a more family-friendly place to live.

This has meant that our community consists of Muslims from all the regions of the war-torn world, as well as economic immigrants & Muslim Americans, including converts.

Being that we are in the region known as the "SIOUX EMPIRE", our community consists of various racial/ethnic groups including Native American Muslim converts of Sioux tribal origin.

Our members bring diversity in language, life experiences, education as well as culture to our South Dakota ummah, al-humdulillah.

Insha Allah, we recognize everyone has a gift from Allah, and we greatly appreciate what each is able to contribute (be it knowledge, skills or other things).

Our Muslim community consists not only people living down the street who attend the masjid regularly, but also Muslims who live miles away (sometimes over one hundred miles) who are only able to come to the masjid once in a while due to the great distance they must travel.

Some of our community members live in towns where they are the only Muslims in their town (in some cases the only physician for that town). They serve as medical professionals where there has been a shortage of medical professionals in the rural towns of this state, may Allah reward them for the service they provide for so many. Some are teachers & professors helping the educational system in the state to educate its young people. Others still are opening up their own businesses, mashallah. Our city (Sioux Falls) has been recognized several years in a row, for being one of the top places to start a business, alhumdulillah. This has meant that business minded Muslim Brothers & Sisters have found that they can open up their own businesses & make a living in a halal format, with little of the red tape (restrictions or fees, etc) found in many other regions of the country.

We encourage those Muslims seeking to move from the larger crime ridden cities to seriously consider the benefits of smaller cities in the midwest part of the United States.

You may find that cities like ours are worthwhile places to raise your children, away from the drugs, gangs & violence. Housing is often not as difficult to obtain as it is in some cities, such as New York City. Diversity is also encouraged amongst our city's government & the state. You won't find public schools here with metal detectors or gangs either, which makes the public schools far more suitable environments for those wishing to keep their kids in public school.

Those seeking to home school their children, will find that our state has one of the most easy application processes for home-schooling & will also provide textbooks & other assistance; while allowing you to choose your child's curriculum

Also employment opportunities abound throughout the region. So, if you seek to make hijrah away from the crime & violence of the larger cities in the US, and don't have the means to move overseas...consider the other option. Move to Sioux Falls & other cities like it where there are Masjids & Islamic Centers.

Sioux Falls also, alhumdulillah, is developing a full time madrasa that will insha Allah serve the needs of the Muslim children for many years to come.

If you would like to contribute to this much needed institution that will, insha Allah, provide the foundation to the next generation's Muslim identity... please consider contacting Brother Imann at 605-376-0610.

Our community members are working to provide sadaqa to the Native American community at Fort Thompson, South Dakota. It is the tribal community known as Crow Creek Sioux Tribe.

They are unfortunately the poorest Native American tribe in the nation, yet few Americans even realize just how impoverished these people are! They do not get money for being "Indian"! That is a myth, so don't think they are just not working. There is a 70-80% unemployment rate & this is because the gov't has placed their reservation hundreds of miles from ANYTHING!!! They still struggle just to survive as a people.

Many don't survive! Their life expectancy is getting LOWER & Lower. Most NEVER get to 50 years of age!

They are truly oppressed & truly needing the help of the Ummah. So members in our community are working to provide some help, even if it is small in comparison to their needs. We at least are trying to help, when & where we can. The photos are pics of some of the children from last September's project that Islamic Relief, in conjunction with some of our members, put on at the Crow Creek Reservation. The event is known as Day of Dignity.

If you would like to learn how you can contribute to the Islamic Relief sponsored Day of Dignity at Crow Creek, please contact brother Imann at 605-376-0610 or Sister Clareen at Islamic Relief in Washington DC or visit their website at www.irw.org to obtain their office phone numbers. Insha Allah, you will consider helping us by having a fund raiser in your area, that collects Wal-Mart gift cards or cards from Lowe's or Home Depot, so that we can purchase needed supplies for these people, who like the Palestinian people have been removed from their lands & places in inhospital conditions in an effort to force them to move so as to survive, and thus ethnically cleanse the region of their cultural community as a people.

Other:
We have a few people in our state who are investigating Islam, as a possible faith choice. We ask that you please make dua for them as they learn more about the faith & Islamic way of life. We also are happy to announce that Sioux Falls is soon to be home to an Islamic school (Madrasa). Sister Nor David, who has been teaching weekend courses at the masjids, will be heading up the new full time school, insha Allah, and with others has organized to develop the school board of trustees. Sister Nor brings years of being a school principal in Singapore & a teacher both in Singapore & in South Dakota. At the current time we are seeking donations to help in the establishment of the madrasa. If you are interested in supporting this project, which is the ONLY Islamic school in the state, plz contact Sister Nor's husband, Victor at 605-376-0610.

Salam! I am a new Convert to Islam and a Native American. I have not been to the Mushtid yet. I am still learning about Islam, which is a lifelong process. I have yet to find friends who are muslims in town and hope to find some soon but as my dad says, I am a hermit crab just peeking from the safety of her shell.
