Someone asked: What is wahn (enervation). Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him): He replied: Love of the world and dislike of death.

About Me:
I'm using this site as a platform to encourage my fellow Muslims to think about and get involved in designing and developing our communities across the globe to be sustainable and comfortable and peaceful places to live, inshAllah. The links below are meant to spark ideas and give context about community development.
POMEROY, PREFACE TO THE SUBDIVISION OF LAND IN SAN MATEO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA 11 (1932)
"A subdivision is not merely a means of marketing land; it is far more, a process of community building. All the flurry of subdivision sales, all the financial considerations involved at the time, all the huge importance of immediate details--these are infinitesimal factors in the ultimate result, which is the addition of an integral part of the community, a part, which, once established in the comparatively short flash of time involved, is fixed to its physical framework and permanently marked in its character. The fleeting economic effect of the act of subdividing gives way to the permanent, inexorable economic and social effect of the subdivision as a part of the form and life of the community. No subdivision is too small to have character. It may be no more that a particular curve to a street, or the placing of the lots, or the skillful use of setbacks, or the planting plan; but it may give to a mere linear design the impulse of life and set it throbbing with vitality."

Why do we need to think about how we live and how our communities are built?
The following videos demonstrate some of the problems and concerns we need to understand. Some of the videos make predictions of the future. Of course, Allah only knows whether any of these predictions will actually materialize but it is nonetheless useful to learn about them.

Ibn Khaldun's thesis on the rise and fall of dynasties: At the beginning of their power new dynasties are led by men of bedouin inclinations with no taste for luxury. Their spartan existence makes small demands on the body politic and they devote themselves to the proper purpose of government. The success of their rule leads to a thriving urban civilization. The high prosperity for a while permits government diversion of profits into luxuries. By the time the adverse effects (due to hidden costs) of the expansion of government activity into luxury areas is noticeable, it is too late to change for the generation raised in luxury have lost the meritorious attitudes of their ancestors that made effective minimalist government possible. As the dynasty grows old, the beneficiaries of urban civilization and of government largess have become used to laziness and ease. They are sunk in well-being and luxury. They have entrusted defense of their property and their lives to the governor and ruler who rules them, and to the militia which has the task of guarding them. They find full assurance of safety in the walls that surround them, and the fortifications that protect them. Thy are carefree and trusting, and have ceased to carry weapons. Successive generations have grown up in this way of life. They have become like women and children, who depend upon the master of the house. (Ibn Khaldun 1967, v. II, p. 257)
