salaam alaikum Sister, you asked me months back what the cost of living is like in South Dakota. its lower than many states, alhumdulillah. The housing market has been one that is different from the rest of the country. We don't have the outrageous house costs & rent is within reason as well, alhumdulillah. When my husband & I bought our old gallery house, which we live in, we paid $20,000 for it. Its a two story building with four bedrooms. Was once a hotel back in the late 1800s. For years I tried to encourage Muslims to migrate to South Dakota because of its "climate" toward Muslims & modest religious groups and the cost of homes. But we got few willing to take the risk. Those who did, found they were able to get houses before the market began to rise in prices. Now its much tougher to find houses for less than $50,000. But alhumdulillah, sometimes you can. Another issue is the numer of Muslims who want to come in on someone else's dollar. (ie want us to buy a place & let them buy it from us!) That's not possible for us. But as Sister Nieema can attest, people in the region are quite willing to accept diversity. One Brother moved his family to a small prairie town & bought the local cafe. The local farmers got accustomed to seeing his niqabi wife working in the kitchen; while he & his son served the food. Unfortunately he had to return to Minneapolis due to his mother's failing health & a need to be with her. He is still looking for a Muslim to take over his cafe, insha Allah, and live in the apartment above it. We here are not in one town, but in small prairie towns all around the area. Its a place were one must have a car, but its possible to raise one's children in a halal manner. Whether you home school or send them to public school, its just far better than what is available in many regions of the country, from my experience & I've lived in many parts of the US (NY, OH, CA, CO, OR, WY) just to name a few.
