Assalaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatu What or who is Salaf? The word Salaf is a shortened version of the word Salafus-Saalih, which means the Righteous Predecessors. It refers specifically to the first three generations of Islaam. The first, the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam & his Sahaabah (companions). The second, the Taabi'een (the followers of the companions). The third, the Tabaa'at-Taabi'een (the followers of the followers of the companions). Generally, this term refers to all those pious predecessors who followed the way of the Salaf and who have preceded us in time. Imaam Aboo 'Amr 'Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn 'Amr al-Awzaa'ee [d.179H]: "Stick to the aathaar of those who have preceded (man salaf), even if the people reject you. And beware of the opinions of men, even if they beautify it for you with speech. So the affair is young and you are upon a Straight Path with regards to it." Shaykh-ul-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah: "Whoever deviates from the Madhhab and Tafseer of the Sahaaba and Tabi'een to that which opposes it then he has erred in that rather (he has) innovated."

Khawaarij Name of group - Khawaarij Adherent to group - Khaarijee, plural - Khaarijiyyoon The Khawaarij are a sect which came out to kill 'Alee ibn Abee Taalib (radhi-yallaahu 'anhu) concerning the issue of ruling/leadership. Their chosen path was one of distancing themselves from 'Uthmaan ibn 'Affaan and 'Alee ibn Abee Taalib (radhi-yallaahu 'anhumaa), and condoning walking out against the Imaam (leader) and seeking to overthrow him if he opposes the Sunnah. Likewise, they would make takfeer (render someone a kaafir) of anyone who commits a major sin and claim that he will forever abide in the Fire of Hell. ash-Shahrastaanee defines them as: ((Anyone who walks out against (seeking to overthrow) the true appointed Imaam (leader) upon whose leadership the Jamaa'ah is in agreement is called a Khaarijee. This is the case, despite whether the walking out (against the Imaam) occurred in the days of the Rightly-Guided Khulafaa. or other than them from the Taabi'een)). And some of the pious predecessors used to call all those who practiced Islaam based upon their desires as Khawaarij. The Khawaarij were the first sect to appear in the history of Islaam, splitting up into more than 20 different sub-sects. However, it is said that the major sub-sects of the Khawaarij are seven: 1) al-Mahkamah al-Oolaa; 2) al-Azaariqah; 3) an-Najdaat; 4) ath-Thu'aalabah; 5) al-'Ajaaridah; 6) al-Abaadhiyyah; 7) as-Safriyyah. Some of the other sub-sects include: 1) al-Ibaathiyyah; 2) ash-Shamraakhiyyah; 3) as-Salaydiyyah; 4) as-Sirriyyah; 5) al-'Azriyyah; 6) al-'Ajradiyyah; 7) ash-Shakkiyyah; 8) al-Fadhaliyyah; 9) al-Bayhasiyyah; 10) al-'Atwiyyah; 11) al-Fadeekiyyah; 12) al-Ja'diyyah; 13) ash-Shaybiyyah; 14) al-Hurooriyyah; 15) al-Khamariyyah; 16) ash-Sharaah.

Qaadiyaaniyyah Name of group - Qaadiyaaniyyah, also known as the Ahmadiyyah Adherent to group - Qaadiyaanee, plural - Qaadiyaaniyyoon. Also known as an Ahmadee or Mirza.ee By the concensus of the scholars, the Qaadiyaaniyyah are a kaafir sect which assumes the name of Islaam to cover up its real evil aims and goals, and its corrupted 'aqeedah, of which the most dangerous aspect being the calling to and belief in the prophethood of their founder; In addition to changing the text of the Noble Qur.aan, and denying jihaad and making takfeer (render someone a kaafir) of the Muslims and displaying loyalty to the enemies of the Muslims. It's founder was a man by the name of Mirza Ghulaam Ahmad al-Qaadiyaanee who was born in the 19th century (C.E.) in the city of Qaadiyaan in the province of Panjab in India in 1839 C.E. at the time of the British rule there. Hence this sect assumes its name from the birthplace of its founder. He came from a family who were well-known for their deviousness in their religious affairs, and as such Mirza Ghulaam Ahmad grew up in such surroundings. Whilst India was still under British rule, the Qaadiyaaniyyah movement was founded in 1900 C.E. with the aim of distancing the Muslims from their true religion from such obligations as jihaad as was propogated in the English language magazine at that time called ((The Religions)). Mirza Ghulaam Ahmad claimed that revelation descended upon him via dreams, and he then claimed that he was the reviver of Islaam of that time, and that he resembled the prophet 'Eesaa ('alayhis-salaam). Later, in 1901 C.E. he claimed he was actually the prophet 'Eesaa ('alayhis-salaam), and in 1904 C.E. he claimed prophethood for himself by saying he was "Krishna" who was the idol worshipped by the Hindus. The British rulers in India did their best to promote this movement and as such acknowledged its support for them, and they in turn acknowledged allegiance to them. Mirza Ghulaam Ahmad was known by his followers to be a n

Jamaa'ah at-Tableegh (Tablighi Jamat) Name of group - Jamaa'ah at-Tableegh, also known as Tablighi Jamat Adherent to group - Tableeghee, also known as Tablighi, or T.J. The da'wah of the Jamaa'ah at-Tableegh is based upon spreading the merits of Islaam to everyone they are able to reach. This entails it's adherents to give up some of their time to go out and spread and propogate the da'wah keeping well away from political and partisan issues. It's members are compelled into going out (khurooj) to give da'wah and mix with the Muslims in their masaajid, houses and businesses and give words of advice and encourage them to come out with them to give da'wah. They advise that no members should get themselves involved in any quarrels with the Muslims or the government. Foundation and major personalities - The founder was called Shaykh Muhammad Ilyaas al-Kaandahlawee who was born in Kaandahlah, a village in the region of Sahaaranfoor in India in 1303 A.H. (1887 C.E.) (died 1364 A.H. / 1948 C.E.). Initially, he sought knowledge in this village, then later travelled to Delhi where he completed his studies at the Madrasah Deoband which is amongst the biggest Hanafee schools in the Indian sub-continent, which was setup in the year 1283 A.H. (1867 C.E.). He also sought knowledge under the guardianship of his older brother, Shaykh Muhammad Yahya, who was a teacher at the Madrasah Mathaahir al-'Uloom in Sahaaranfoor. Later, he studied under Shaykh Ashraf 'Alee Thanwee (1280 A.H. (1863 C.E.) - 1364 A.H. (1943 C.E.)), who was known to them as ((Hakeem al-Ummah)). Likewise, he also studied under Shaykh Mahmood Hasan (1268 A.H. (1851 C.E.) - 1339 A.H. (1920 C.E.)) who was amongst the major scholars of the Madrasah Deoband and the Jamaa'ah at-Tableegh. As for Shaykh Rasheed Ahmad al-Kankoohee, born in 1829 C.E. (died 1905 C.E.); Shaykh Muhammad Ilyaas actually gave bay'ah (oath of allegiance) to him in 1315 A.H. (1899 C.E.). He later
