Many Muslims think that the word translated as 'pictures' from the Arabic actually referred to sculptures and other type figures, fashioned and formed with the hands, than pictures, taken with camera. Picture itself include many form of this medium including but not limited to drawings, paintings, sketchings, stills and moving pictures, which include TV, DVD, You will note in some translations of relevant hadith that the term PICTURE TAKERS are used.
This is impossible to be understood as pictures taken by cameras as there were NO cameras existing at that time, so this would definitely be a bad translation and the problem would be with the translator and not the hadith itself or the reporter of hadith.
Some believe that pictures, now used in the general sense, are okay as long as they are kept in a book and not framed or hung on wall. Others believe that pictures are okay as long as the face are not shown or is blurred. There is one hadith ofter recited which include a report which tend to say in its translation that 'Angels do not come into houses where there are dogs and pictures." [NOTE:not exact quote]. This cannot be true or mean that leterally, at least not for ALL angels because the angel of death come for people surrounded by pictures and dogs;sometime the dog will be lying there and the person is dead. People's souls are taken in picture studios, picture processing plants and dog pounds. This is definitely a controversal subject in Islam and I appreciate and respect your view on the matter and thank you for bringing it up, so that we can deal with it once again. I am sure this will not be the last time.as salaam alakum

I like Islam and clearly defined Islamic concepts. I have posted blogs about pictures and one must be guided by ones understanding and knowledge. You may wish to read my posts on this subject. As to pictures, specific, I can tell you that there were not cameras in the time of Prophet Muhammad [P], land, basic, box, reflex or digital, and were it not for pictures, especially in educational and scientific books few of us would know what an atom, or tiger, or lior, or chinese, look like, less more be able to define their specific features, and Allah [S] orders us to get knowledge. To ban or close off All TV, moving pictures, would go counter to this, and in about 10 years would set the muslim community behind ever further. Movies or theatre web cams or video recorders or DVD or computer monitors would be next to be banned? Should we ban all radios because of some fowl music or programs which brings image/pictures to our minds? Cell phone cameras as well? when we are ordered to gain knowledge?what about hospital cameras i.e. xray machines, body scanners? How would we determine when an operation is need for brain sugery?or one have lung cancer? Is this a matter we should take so lightly? jazakallah khairn.
